15 People Share Their Best Pieces of Tough Advice

There are times in life where you have to tell people things that they don’t want to hear. We’ve all been there at one point or another and on both sides of the conversation.

AskReddit users went on the record and shared the best tough advice they think you can offer someone.

1. That’s important.

“Hang out with people you actually like.

Changed my whole life.”

2. Get started.

“No matter who it was that caused the problems in your life, it is ultimately going to be you who has to fix them.

Might as well start now.”

3. How will you react?

“You may not have control over what happens to you but you will always have control on how you will react.

We can’t stop ourselves from feeling negative things but we are still awarded the choice if we’re going to act or make decisions based on those feelings.”

4. It’s up to you.

“Life isn’t perfect or fair. Oh well.

Complain all you want but that’s not going to make the problem fix itself now is it?”

5. Don’t stay in bad relationships.

“Don’t cling on to a relationship that isn’t good for you.

If you don’t feel like you could go forward, it’s best to let them go.”

6. Make it a lifetime commitment.

“Get fit young and stay that way.”

7. Start today!

“Now is the best time to start.”

8. People aren’t paying attention.

“Most people don’t give a sh^t what you think, who you are, or what you want.

If you can go through life, acknowledging that while you may matter less to others you can be considerate of their perspective, and feelings, you can save yourself a lot of self inflicted problems.”

9. Be presentable.

“People judge you on what you look like.

I wish it wasn’t true, but it is.

Tidy yourself the f*ck up.”

10. Look in the mirror.

“You run into an as$hole in the morning; you ran into an as$hole.

You run into as$holes all day; you’re the as$hole.”

11. Talk is cheap.

“Don’t hang on to or analyze people’s words or promises.

Actions speak louder than words.”

12. You gotta work hard!

“Hard work beats talent when talent doesn’t work hard.”

13. Shut up and listen.

“You have to know when to shut up. When to shut up and listen, when to shut up and keep your opinion to yourself, when to shut up and pick your battles, when to shut up and think before you speak.

You’re a smart little cookie with great ideas, I’m sure, but a mature person recognizes when their voice isn’t needed or wanted. It’s not usually fair but that’s just tough, kiddo.”

14. Comes from within.

“You are the only person responsible for your own happiness.

People often rely on other things or other people in their life to be happy. They constantly search until they’ve found one thing and then latch onto it with reckless abandon. If it ever leaves they are miserable until they find a new thing.

Happiness comes from within and (as cheesy as it sounds) from loving yourself. After that, everything else is easy.”

15. Don’t waste your time.

“Don’t waste your time or energy hating someone.

Chances are that person enjoys the fact that they are getting to you in some way.

The best way to get back at them is to deprive them of that enjoyment.”
