Pixar Takes Aim at Toxic Masculinity in Bold New Short Film

If you’re into the type of Pixar short film that tackles a serious social issue, Purl is the movie for you.

The film follows a chipper, pink ball of yarn as she begins her career at B.R.O. Capital. Purl starts out wide-eyed and optimistic, but her eagerness is soon met with the realities of an all-male office.

Sound familiar, ladies?

Written and directed by Kristen Lester and produced by Gillian Libbert-Duncan, Purl is the first short film in Pixar’s SparkShorts program.

Lester recently shared how the inspiration for the film mirrors some of her experiences in the world of animation:

“My first job, I was like the only woman in the room, and so in order to do the thing that I loved, I sort of became one of the guys. And then I came to Pixar and I started to work on teams with women for the first time, and that actually made me realize how much of the female aspect of myself I had sort of buried and left behind.”
