Some people might thing writing is a cushy job, but here’s the truth – it’s not that easy. And the shorter the form, the bigger the challenge.

Which is why being able to legit give someone chills in two sentences or less takes some pretty serious thought (and a dose of talent, besides) – which is exactly what these 15 stories aim to do.

15. Eep!

My sister says that mommy killed her.

Mommy says that I don’t have a sister.

14. Okay nope never doing that again.

Don’t be scared of the monsters, just look for them.

Look to your left, to your right, under your bed, behind your dresser, in your closet but never look up, she hates being seen.

13. I love alternate timeline stories.

The doctors told the amputee he might experience a phantom limb from time to time.

Nobody prepared him for the moments though, when he felt cold fingers brush across his phantom hand.

12. Chills down my spine.

The last thing I saw was my alarm clock flashing 12:07 before she pushed her long rotting nails through my chest, her other hand m*ffling my screams.

I sat bolt upright, relieved it was only a dream, but as I saw my alarm clock read 12:06, I heard my closet door creak open.

11. I need to know who, though!

Years ago, a lone chair appeared in the center of the basement, and no matter how many times I put it back in the corner it always found a way back to the center.

It took a long time to realize it was positioned underneath the kitchen, almost like someone had taken a seat at the dinner table with the rest of us.

10. Just a little.

“Growing up with cats and dogs, I got used to the sounds of scratching at my door while I slept.

Now that I live alone, it is much more unsettling.”

9. MY HEART.

I begin tucking him into bed and he tells me, “Daddy check for monsters under my bed.”

I look underneath for his amusement and see him, another him, under the bed, staring back at me quivering and whispering, “Daddy there’s somebody on my bed.”

8. There is so much nope here.

I can’t move, breathe, speak or hear and it’s so dark all the time.

If I knew it would be this lonely, I would have been cremated instead.

7. Actual nightmare fuel.

They celebrated the first successful cryogenic freezing.

He had no way of letting them know he was still conscious.

6. This is legit creepy.

My grandfather, who died of Alzheimers several years ago, refused to let the house lights be turned off at night. The light, he offered, was the only thing keeping the dark men away.

What terrifies me about those two sentences is that they’re true. The lights didn’t go off in that house at night for three months.

5. This is a killer story opening.

My grandmother told me that it was a gift to see the angel of death in front of people’s houses, to know that he’d be collecting someone there soon.

I thought it was a gift too, up until the day I began to see it in front of every house.

4. Their mistake, really.

Yesterday my parents told me I was too old for an imaginary friend and that I had to let her go.

They found her body this morning.

3. I want to know what comes next!

For years we heard the little voices and footsteps of the ghost children in our old farmhouse, and we got used to them.

Then one day they went quiet, which should have been our own cue to leave.

2. Are your windows open, by chance?

After so many years living alone in this large house I came to a startling revelation.

In this time I had closed far more doors than I had opened.

1. This one is the worst.

It sat on my shelf, with thoughtless porcelain eyes and the prettiest pink doll dress I could find.

Why did she have to be born still?

I’m fre*king out!

Which is your favorite? Do you think you could do better?
